TLT Units

Teaching and Learning with Technology at Penn State is a unit of Information Technology Services (ITS) that provides the highest quality technology tools, facilities and services in support of Penn State's core missions of teaching, research and service.  TLT is made up of several units, all with goals aligned to support teaching, learning, and research.  Learn more about each below.

  • Classroom and Lab Computing (CLC): Our mission is to provide facilities, support, and services for student computing labs and technology classrooms by deploying technology that is both useful and user-friendly for faculty and students. We work to achieve our mission by:
    • Providing computing and environment resources for students and faculty to facilitate teaching and coursework.
    • Supporting specific environments for highly technical disciplines, such as high end video editing and graphics rendering.
    • Collaborating with other departments and campuses to leverage existing knowledge and computing resources for students and faculty.
    • Providing secure, computer-based classroom testing facilities.
    • Providing services to faculty to share protected media (video, audio) for coursework materials and reference.
    • Facilitating students interactive learning in the classroom.
  • Education Technology Services (ETS): Our mission is to provide leadership and support in the appropriate use of technology for teaching, learning, and research. We work to achieve our mission by:
    • Creating opportunities to engage faculty to further their use of technology for teaching and learning
    • Supporting technology innovation and adoption to support to teaching and learning
    • Participating in research opportunities to better educate faculty, staff, and students in the use of emerging technologies as they relate to teaching and learning
    • Enhancing curricula through the use of instructional design
    • Managing University-wide technology implementations that are designed to support teaching, learning, and research
    • Hosting both physical and virtual events that are designed to bring members of the teaching and learning community together to engage in meaningful activities
  • ITS Training Services: Our mission is to provide learning opportunities in technology to students, faculty, and staff to facilitate learning, teaching, and professional development activities. We work to achieve our mission by:
    • Providing just-in-time learning opportunities for all faculty, staff and students.
    • Collaborating in the development of best practices for conducting assessment, developing learning materials and leading training opportunities.
    • Implementing a Learning Management System to facilitate the registration and tracking of enrollments.
    • Developing competency and/or job-based training pilot.
    • Facilitating informal learning opportunities using the Technology Training Community.
  • WebLionOur mission is to provide consulting, software products, hosting, training and support for Penn State units using content management systems and web-based applications.  We work to achieve our mission by:
    • Engaging students, faculty, staff and communities in a rich Web presence.
    • Being active for all missions of Penn State. Projects in teaching, research, outreach and business processes (service component)
    • Building a community of expertise. The success of the WebLion project depends on the creation of a dynamic, innovative and self-sustaining community of expertise within Penn State.
    • Improving visibility and market share. All colleges and campuses at Penn State know of the option to join WebLion, understand WebLion's capabilities, and have had made an explicit decision whether to join WebLion.
    • Developing infrastructure. Network and server hosting services, specifications for REST Web services.
    • Developing specialized products and applications for HiEd institutions. Penn State developers (supported by WebLion) have developed a wide variety of new Zope/Plone-based applications that improve business processes/administration, the student experience, and teaching and research processes.
    • Developing and unify marketing of ITS Web services.  Attract new partnerships and collaborations. Improve training of ITS consultants regarding services provided by the WebLion project. Support Penn State and third-party designers and developers with templates and specifications for RFPs.
    • Support use of open source application frameworks in higher education through community events.

Special Projects

 
  • ANGEL
    • ANGEL is the Penn State University enterprise course managements system.  The system is being used in more creative ways for teaching, learning, and collaboration.  It encompasses many tools (Gradebook, quizzing, learning object repositories, HTML editor, etc) that enable efficient and effective development, delivery and management of courses, course content and learning outcomes.  Engaging communication and collaboration capabilities enhance instruction to deliver leading edge teaching and learning.  In total, ANGEL supports 100,000 users, 9,000 groups, and 10,000 active course sections representing over 70% of PSU course offerings.  ANGEL also facilitates non-academic functions, such as the On-Line Student Evaluation of Teacher Effectiveness and the Course Submission and Consultation System.
